The Super Mario Bros. Movie Review | Showcase of The Amusement Nintendo is Known For (Spoiler-Free)
The much-awaited movie based on the universally famed character Mario recently hit the theatre. Backed by a powerpack star cast, stunning animation, and a fast-paced screenplay, this movie is a treat for Nintendo fans worldwide and a decent invitation to audiences outside of Nintendo fanbase.
Released on the first week of April, this 2023 animated flick features an origin story for Brooklyn-based brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Bowser (Jack Black). Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogan play supporting characters Toad and Donkey Kong.
The animation of this movie is one of the most striking features, paying homage to the game while incorporating more realism. It makes it enjoyable for kids, adults, and elders who played the Mario games growing up. Even though famous actors like Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy play the leading roles, Jack Black’s antagonistic Bowser steals the show. Black, as usual, brings his comedic charisma to the part of playing a menacing yet entertaining and colorful villain.
The movie is fast-paced, but more time could have been given to Pratt’s Mario. However, possible sequels and spinoffs are being reported. If it happens, we could have a potential Nintendo Cinematic Universe. It can be a massive commercial success for Universal Studios and a dream come true for fans worldwide.
